Father’s Day takes a dive

For some dads, spending quality time with their children might be as scary as swimming with sharks Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, Larry Anthony said today.

“However, I can confirm that as a father and from my experience this morning that time with the children is no where near as daunting as facing a grey reef shark or shark ray.”

Mr Anthony, father of three, was diving with Mr Pat Farmer, Member for Macarthur and father of two, in the Great Barrier Reef Oceanarium at the Sydney Aquarium to promote the ‘Fathers Go Free’ initiative.

Dads will receive free or discounted entry to participating zoos and parks across Australia on Father’s Day – Sunday 1 September.

“The Sydney Aquarium will admit fathers for free when with their children this Father’s Day. I congratulate the Aquarium, and all the other participating zoos and parks for their generous support to help families celebrate the day.

“With the recent focus on mothers, I wanted to organise something this Father’s Day to acknowledge the important role of fathers.

“No matter what form a family may take, fathers are a vital part. A common characteristic of happy and stable children is a good relationship with their father.

“Some fathers may feel lost at sea when it comes to parenting. However, it is important that fathers spend quality time with their children. Getting out with the kids to one of the participating zoos or parks on fathers day would be a good way to spend Father’s Day.

“More frequently we are spending recreational time in sedentary activities, such as watching TV. Australians have a genuine love of the outdoors and wildlife. Getting outdoors and walking around one of our fascinating zoos or parks will be a great way for the family to spend quality time together this Father’s Day.

“I hope this can become an annual event and I encourage all families to visit a local zoo or park. It will be a great way for families to thank their dad this Father’s Day,” Mr Anthony said.
