Youth homelessness program renewed
Minister for Community Services, Larry Anthony today reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to tackling youth homelessness by announcing the round one Reconnect services that will be funded for a further three years.
“Through the Reconnect program, young people and their families can access early intervention and prevention programs such as counselling, family mediation and practical support.
“Reconnect services have proven to be a highly effective way of heading off some of the problems that contribute to youth homelessness by assisting young people to reconnect with their families, communities, education, training and employment.
“After an independent assessment confirmed 26 first round of Reconnect Services were operating well. These services will be funded to continue to build on their good work to prevent youth homelessness.
“The Coalition Government made an initial commitment of $60 million in 1999 to fund 100 Reconnect services over four years.
“Since late 1999, Reconnect services have helped over 6,000 young people who were either homeless or ‘at risk’.
“The benefits of the Reconnect program have been seen Australia wide, with around half of all services located in regional, remote and Indigenous communities.
“We recognise that youth homelessness is an important issue and it is crucial to build the capacity of Australian families and communities so they can help their own young people.
“The Coalition Government will continue to form partnerships with young people, families and communities, to more effectively address this damaging social problem,” Mr Anthony said.
