Helping people with MS

Minister for Community Services, Larry Anthony, today announced almost $50,000 in funding to help people with multiple sclerosis (MS) and their carers attend an international conference to be held in Melbourne later this year.

“MS is the most chronic disease affecting more young Australians, particularly women, than any other neurological disease. More than 18,000 Australians have MS and there is no known cause or cure.

“Experts in the area, including international members of the Medical Advisory Board, health care and rehabilitation professionals, neurologists, researchers and representatives from MS Societies will attend the conference.

“The focus of this conference is to help Australians with MS and their carers respond to issues brought on by the disease such as the deterioration of relationships, diminishing opportunities for participation and financial impacts.

“It is important those with MS and their carers learn about the disease and the challenges they may face. This conference provides an opportunity to hear from experts in the field.

“The Government is committed to supporting people with disabilities. This funding is evidence of the Government’s determination to help people with a disability maximise their abilities,” Mr Anthony said.
