Anthony gives thumbs up to Thumbs Up for Kids Day

The Federal Government will join with celebrities, health care professionals, survivors of child abuse and the community to celebrate “Thumbs Up For Kids” Day at Sydney’s Wonderland on Saturday 14 July 2001, Minister for Community Services, Larry Anthony, said today.

“The Coalition Government has given $10,000 in funding to help stage the inaugural fundraiser for the Advocates of Survivors of Child Abuse (ASCA) to raise money for adult survivors of child abuse and their children.

“Andrew Denton and Kerryn Phelps will compere the celebrity packed event with appearances from the cast of Home and Away and the band Mental As Anything. Ken Done has designed the t-shirts and stickers.

“ASCA is a non-profit organisation dedicated to helping survivors of child abuse and all funds raised will be used to establish a camp, operate a support line and for their adult survivor healing centre in Cessnock, NSW.

“The Federal Government has also provided more than $278,000 in funding to ASCA to establish a national network of 20 peer support groups for survivors of child abuse.

“Child abuse is a hideous crime and a concern for the whole community. All of us must be tireless in our fight against it.

“This event is a great opportunity to raise money for a worthwhile cause and to increase community awareness of the terrible and lasting impact child abuse has on children as they grow to adulthood.

“I encourage everyone to get out to Wonderland to support a great cause and have an enjoyable day,” Mr Anthony said.

Tickets to “Thumbs Up for Kids” Day can be purchased from Ticketek.
