Big pig’s IT access

Young Canberrans will have free access to a range of information technology services following Minister for Community Services, Larry Anthony’s official launch today of the Connecting to the Community project.

Mr Anthony said the Federal Government provided $38,000 to buy 11 new computers and three printers for the Big Pig Internet Café in Braddon.

“The café, which is the first of its kind in the ACT to provide free access for young people in particular, will go a long way to empowering young people with IT skills.

“Internet access will make a huge difference when it comes to looking for information about the vast array of community services available to young people at risk living in the ACT.

“Equally as important, they will be able to find out about job vacancies, learn how to draft effective resumes and applications, and get to know more about IT training.

“The cafe will provide a safe and supportive environment for young people from disadvantaged backgrounds who may face a variety of issues. It also provides the facilities and surroundings that can help build self esteem and confidence.

“This funding is in addition to the $60,000 that we give each year to Youth in the City to provide their services.

Mr Anthony said it was part of the Government’s work to help communities develop solutions and answers to their own problems.

“It is about local communities working through local issues, and Government providing the necessary support.

“The access to information, support and practical IT skills that will be provided by the Big Pig Internet Café will translate into real opportunities and help for young people,” Mr Anthony said.
