New Pilot relationship project for men in Cabramatta

Federal Minister for Community Services, Larry Anthony, today launched the new Burnside Multicultural Men and Family Relationship Services pilot project in Cabramatta, to encourage men from non-English speaking backgrounds to build and maintain healthy family relationships.

“Men from non-English speaking backgrounds often find it difficult to ask for help or know where to go for help when things go wrong,” Mr Anthony said.

“A high percentage of the population living in the local area served by Burnside Cabramatta are from non-English speaking background, and many have experienced trauma in their countries of origin.”

“Together with the stress associated with settlement in a new country, many also face the challenge of cultural conflict and isolation.”

“This pilot service will help these men to identify and manage stress, gain parenting skills and help improve conflict resolution skills. It will be responsive to their needs and help them to access parenting resources, support groups and networks.”

The Federal Government will provide $210,500 to the pilot project. This funding is part of the $6 million allocated to the Men and Family Relationships Initiative, under the Partnerships Against Domestic Violence measure.

“This new pilot service clearly demonstrates the Government’s commitment to address men’s needs in a practical, responsive and relevant way,” Mr Anthony said.

“The Men and Family Relationships Initiative aims to minimise the emotional, social and economic costs associated with disruption to a family through services delivered by community based organisations.”

“There is no doubt about the vital role a father plays in a child’s development. The Burnside Cabramatta pilot service will help men to develop their capacity to deal with the challenges facing them and be effective fathers and husbands.”
