United Nations Commission on the Status of Women

The Commission on the Status of Women meets annually to promote the implementation of women’s equal rights, consider emerging challenges, share information about best practice and develop international networks on gender issues.

Minister Assisting the Prime Minister for Women’s Issues, the Hon Julie Bishop MP, today welcomed the delivery of Australia’s country statement at the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women in New York overnight.

“In 2007, the Commission is focussing on the theme of Elimination of all forms of discrimination and violence against the girl child,” Minister Bishop said.

“This session of the Commission is an important opportunity to exchange views with member states on the challenges for young women growing up in the 21st century.

“Australia has a proud record of advancing the cause of women and girls in Australia and in our assistance to other nations through our international aid program.

“We will continue to work to address remaining challenges and Australia is looking forward to working with the United Nations and other member states.

“I wish delegates from all countries a successful conclusion to the session over the coming week, which includes International Women’s day on 8 March,” Minister Bishop said.
