More Funds For Men’s Shed “Great Mates” Project

Men of Sanctuary Point and the Bay and Basin region in NSW will have increased access to social, mentoring and employment services with $56,064 in Australian Government funding to continue for the “Great Mates” project.

Senator Stephens, today visited the Bay and Basin Men’s Shed which had received over $140,000 to run “Great Mates” since September 2007.

“This project provides a meeting place where men can feel relaxed, supported and have the chance to meet new people and form long-lasting friendships.

“It also provides a place where men can be referred to the services they need – such as healthcare and employment. This is crucial, as one in six men experience depression at some point in their life, and less than half seek help.

“Each week, men participate in workshops which match mentors with participants to provide companionship and help build trust,” said Senator Stephens.

Men’s Sheds offer workshops and seminars on a range of topics including health, happiness, wellbeing, finance and budgeting and grief and loss, as well as helping men to reconnect with work.

The additional funding will enable Men’s Shed to continue to refer hundreds of men to employment opportunities.

Senator Stephens congratulated Bay and Basin Men’s Shed on its strong business and community partnerships.

“It’s great to see Men’s Shed also working with local disability organisations, such as Life Without Barriers, Brain Storm and Coastal Waters Retirement Village Hostel, and engaging in strong business partnerships like the partnership with the local Bunnings.

Senator Stephens also acknowledged the important role that Bay and Basin Resource Centre Inc has played in supporting the Men’s Shed.
