Young Australians to have their say

Young Australians who are passionate about making a real difference will have the opportunity to have their say on issues which impact on their lives as part of National Youth Roundtable 2007, an Australian Government youth initiative.

The Minister for Community Services, John Cobb, today urged young people,
aged 15 to 24 years, from across the country to apply to be a part of this newly expanded National Youth Roundtable.

‘This year, the Roundtable will be expanded from 30 to up to 45 young people and feature members from culturally diverse backgrounds and locations, including a greater Indigenous youth representation,’ Mr Cobb said.

‘The National Indigenous Youth Leadership Group will become part of the National Youth Roundtable 2007 to ensure that the views of young Indigenous Australians are heard on a broad range of issues. The Roundtable will open the way for an energetic exchange and sharing of ideas between Indigenous and non-Indigenous members. The National Indigenous Council which provides policy advice to the government will perform a mentoring and support role for Indigenous members of the Roundtable.

‘The Roundtable provides a voice for all young Australians and explore many issues important to youth and relevant to Government policy interests.

‘It gives members with the opportunity to meet and work with other motivated young people, develop their skills in project management, understand how government works and meet with representatives of the Australian Government.

‘Last year we received over 440 applications for the National Youth Roundtable, which clearly demonstrates the level of interest young people have in the Roundtable, as well as its importance and the role it plays on a national level.

‘I encourage all young Australians to have their voices heard and apply for the National Youth Roundtable for 2007,’ Mr Cobb said.

Applications open Thursday 19 October and close Thursday 16 November 2006.
