National Youth Week ’06: Just Add You
Mix together a bit of fun, a festival and a live band or two, throw in a few exhibitions, then…. Just Add You!
The Minister for Community Services, John Cobb, is inviting all Australians aged 12 to 25 to join in the festivities for this year’s National Youth Week (NYW).
‘Everyone’s welcome and there’ll be plenty to do in all States and Territories from April 1 right through until April 9,’ Mr Cobb said.
‘NYW is a perfect opportunity for our young people to celebrate their youth, recognise their community contributions and have the opportunity, through debates and forums, to voice concerns or issues relevant to them.
‘We kicked it all off today with the help of NYW Ambassadors Lauren Jackson (International basketball star) and Dan O’Connor (former Australian Idol competitor and Neighbours star), Spirit West Services and the Western Bulldogs AFL club.
‘Around 60 young people came out to the Whitten Oval to celebrate NYW, meet with some of their favourite stars and join in some sporting activities.
‘National League netballers and Melbourne Storm rugby league players ran the crowd through some drills, teaching some of the finer points of their sports.
‘A huge range of activities have been planned throughout next week, including a popular national talent competition.
‘Entrants in the national talent competition can perform a song, write a story, make a short film, take a photograph, or create a design.
‘It’s a great chance to begin a career, with prizes ranging from a $5000 shopping spree, a digital video camera, laptops and cameras.
‘NYW is in its seventh year, and this year we hope to make it bigger and better than ever, with more young people involved in more activities across the country… Go on, Just Add You,’ Mr Cobb said.
