Stimulus delivers 16 new affordable homes in Victoria Point

Tanya Plibersek, today inspected a housing project that will deliver 16 new affordable homes in Brisbane’s Victoria Point.

Funded through the Rudd Government’s Nation Building Economic Stimulus Plan, the developer TFA Project Group will construct 16 two-bedroom units.

The units, which are expected to be completed by June, offer environmentally-friendly features including thermal insulation, glazing and building sealing, and native vegetation will be planted around the building.

Up to 30 people have been employed through this project, including two apprentices and most of the contractors and suppliers have come from the South East Queensland region.

“The new homes in Victoria Point are located conveniently close to local shops and services in nearby Cleveland,” Ms Plibersek said.

“This project will deliver 16 new units in an area where affordable housing is greatly needed.”

Ms Plibersek said that around Australia, the Rudd Government’s $5.6 billion investment in social housing is building 19,300 new homes, repairing 70,000 others and supporting 15,000 jobs.

“The program is delivering great value for money with an average per unit cost across the nation of $270,000 – well below the $300,000 in the program guidelines,” Ms Plibersek said.

“In this part of Brisbane alone, the Australian Government has invested $53.3 million to deliver 184 new homes as part of the Nation Building Economic Stimulus Plan. Forty-eight of these homes are currently under construction.”
