$1.2 Million for Projects to Boost Women’s Leadership and Advocacy
The Government today announced the recipients of the 2009 Women’s Leadership and Development Program Grants.
Over $1.2 million will be provided to support 16 projects that will aim to increase Australian women’s representation and advocacy.
Tanya Plibersek said promoting the engagement of women in society remains a high priority for the Australian Government.
“Ensuring that representative organisations are well equipped to advocate and participate in current policy debates is important to improving outcomes for Australian women,” Ms Plibersek said.
Projects funded through the grants include:
- Support for Indigenous women in Central Australia to consult with and represent the vocational education and training needs of their communities to Government.
- A national media training program for female athletes and sports administrators to promote women’s sporting achievements and improve media coverage of women’s sport.
- National advocacy that supports older women’s participation in and input to government policy, planning and service development.
The Australian Government is committed to supporting and promoting women’s leadership in Australian society.
“These grants will support women’s organisations to work with diverse groups of women in the community and assist them engage in current policy debates,” Ms Plibersek said.
“Women busy in their everyday lives, who may not ordinarily engage in Government consultation but whose opinions are just as important, are among the target groups.
“I wish this year’s grant recipients well with the implementation of their projects over the next 12 months and look forward to learning of how their initiatives have boosted women’s leadership and advocacy,” Ms Plibersek said.
