Keeping kids safe: Day for Daniel 2021
Today marks the 17th annual Day for Daniel – Australia’s largest day of action which raises awareness of child safety by honouring the legacy of Daniel Morcombe.
Daniel was abducted and murdered in December 2003, while waiting for a bus just days before his 14th birthday.
Led by the Daniel Morcombe Foundation, this event is an occasion for all Australians to stand together with a shared vision that everyone has a role to play when it comes to keeping kids safe.
Assistant Minister for Children and Families, Michelle Landry, said that Day for Daniel continued to ensure that the important conversation of child protection remains on the national agenda.
“There is nothing more crucial than our responsibility to keep our kids safe and protecting them from predators – it’s as simple as that,” Assistant Minister Landry said.
“Child safety is a priority of the Australian Government and that’s why I’m proud of the outcomes that we have achieved on this front – such as announcing the first National Strategy to Prevent and Respond to Child Sexual Abuse, launching the Australian Centre to Counter Child Exploitation, and establishing the National Office for Child Safety,” Assistant Minister Landry said.
Federal Member for Fairfax, Ted O’Brien, paid tribute to the tireless work of Daniel’s parents Bruce and Denise Morcombe, and commended the Daniel Morcombe Foundation for the tremendous footprint it has built across the nation by educating kids about how to stay safe in physical and online environments, and in supporting young victims of crime.
“Bruce and Denise Morcombe have turned an unthinkable, personal tragedy into a message of hope and a vehicle for positive change across Australia,” Mr O’Brien said.
“The Daniel Morcombe Foundation is tirelessly tackling the insidious issues that surround child exploitation in a way that nobody else can.
“I commend the impassioned resilience and strength that the Morcombe’s so openly show each year on this difficult day, and all that they have achieved in keeping Australian children safe.”
