Rocky expo showcases support for people with disability

People with disability and their supporters and families are encouraged to contribute their input into the reshaping of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

Federal Assistant Minister for Children and Families, Michelle Landry, made the call today when she officially opened the inaugural Reginal Disability Expo in Rockhampton.

The expo showcases services and technology to help people with disability. It was founded by Mum, Sharon Fulwood, who recognised the need to bring ‘everything disability under one roof’, through her own experiences of having two children with disability.

Ms Landry addressed the expo and said people were encouraged to have their say about reforms to the NDIS ahead of 2020.

“The Australian Government is committed to improving support and opportunity for people with disability – including children and families,” Ms Landry said.

“Community consultation is underway to develop a new National Disability Strategy for beyond 2020.”

The National Disability Insurance Scheme is now helping more than 277,000 Australians with disability. This includes more than 46,000 in Queensland – about 2,800 of whom are in the Rockhampton area.

“One in five Australians have a disability and the new NDIS strategy is about creating a more inclusive society that enables Australians with disability to fulfil their potential as equal citizens,” Ms Landry said.
