National Redress Scheme begins for non-government institutions in South Australia

The Federal Minister for Families and Social Services, Paul Fletcher, encouraged South Australian non-government institutions to join the National Redress Scheme, after the state enacted adoption legislation today.

 

Minister Fletcher welcomed the move, as it means people who experienced institutional child sexual abuse that occurred in South Australian non-government institutions that have joined the Scheme such as Scouts South Australia, Scouts Australia, YMCA, the Salvation Army and Global Interaction can have their application progressed.

 

“I encourage the other churches, sporting clubs and organisations to finalise the process and join the National Redress Scheme as quickly as possible, so South Australian survivors can access the support and acknowledgement they have been waiting for.”

 

The South Australian government is expected to join the Scheme in early 2019, which will allow survivors of child sexual abuse related to South Australian Government institutions to receive redress.

 

“We continue to work towards a National Redress Scheme that is accessible to as many survivors throughout Australia as possible, but we need institutions to move quickly,” said Minister Fletcher.

 

The National Redress Scheme can provide counselling, a direct personal response from the responsible institution for people who want it, and a redress payment.
