Spotlight on 2.7 million carers

The Hon Jane Prentice MP, Assistant Minister for Social Services and Disability Services, today launched National Carers Week 2017 in Brisbane.

Carers Week runs from 15-21 October and recognises the outstanding contribution of Australia’s 2.7 million unpaid carers.

“National Carers Week is the time to shine a spotlight on the remarkable contribution carers make to the Australian way of life,” Mrs Prentice said.

“We count on the estimated 36 million unpaid hours carers provide each week and that is why this year’s National Carers Week theme ‘Carers Count’ is so aptly named.

“I commend all carers who support a family member or friend with disability, mental illness, chronic condition, terminal illness, or who are elderly – thank you for your dedication,” Mrs Prentice said.

Research shows nearly 80 per cent of carers still do not see themselves as a carer and may be unaware of the supports and services available to them.

“That’s why the Government is committed to improving the social and economic well-being of carers,” Mrs Prentice said.

“As a first step, I encourage all carers to access the Carer Gateway, an Australian Government initiative that provides access to information and advice for carers.

“Carer Gateway is available online at www.carergateway.gov.au or by calling 1800 422 737 between 8am-6pm on weekdays.

“For all other Australians, I encourage you to visit the Carers Week website to say thank you to our carers and to join the national campaign to raise public awareness of the role and contribution of carers.”
