First NDCAC set to reinvigorate NDS

Members of the National Disability and Carers Advisory Council (NDCAC) met for their inaugural meeting in Canberra today.

The Council’s co-chair and Assistant Minister for Social Services and Disability Services, the Hon Jane Prentice said their role is to provide advice to Government on matters affecting people with disability, to help drive key Government reforms for people with disability, their carers and their family.

“Their advice is critical in ensuring all people with disability are supported, not just those who will be eligible for the NDIS,” she said.

The Council brings together leaders from business and the disability and carer sectors, who will play a key role in collaborating with the States and Territories, mainstream services and other stakeholders to drive reform.

Mrs Prentice said today’s meeting included a discussion on the reinvigoration of the National Disability Strategy 2010-2020 Second Implementation Plan: Driving Action 2015-2018 – a key area of focus for the Council.

“The Council agreed to form three working groups to; address NDS outcomes, Employment Reform, Carer Reform and drive outcomes from the strategy,” she said.

“As the Council works together, it may identify and address other emerging priorities.”

The working groups will meet separately and will consider regulatory reform as part of their tasks.
