Patron announced for International Day of People with Disability

Assistant Minister for Disability Services, the Hon Jane Prentice MP today announced that the 2016 Patron for International Day of People with Disability is Ms Karni Liddell.

International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD) is a United Nations sanctioned day that aims to promote an understanding of people with disability and encourage support for their dignity, rights and well-being.

“As one of Australia’s most successful and well respected Paralympians, and an accomplished businesswoman, radio broadcaster, social commenter and acclaimed international speaker, she is an excellent choice to promote this important day.” Mrs Prentice said.

Karni Liddell is passionate about many social issues as evidenced by her role as a disability champion, ambassador for the National Disability Insurance Scheme in Queensland, and member of Dame Quentin Bryce’s Domestic and Family Violence Council.

Ms Liddell said it was an honour to be named Patron for International Day of People with Disability.

“As Patron, I want to raise awareness of what can be achieved when people with disability are given the same opportunities to reach their full potential as other Australians are,” she said.

“In 2016 we celebrate the10th Anniversary of the National Disability Awards. It’s a great platform to showcase what has been achieved, and to inspire others to do more in their own communities.

“I look forward to encouraging schools, clubs, businesses and people throughout Australia to get involved in International Day of People with Disability and celebrate the achievements of those who are making a difference.”

International Day of People with Disability is celebrated each year on 3 December.
