Boost for Youth Activities in Northern Territory
The Australian Government will deliver $2.6 million for 30 youth activity projects aimed at young people living in Indigenous communities in the Northern Territory.
The Minister for Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs, Jenny Macklin, said the Government is committed to addressing drug and alcohol abuse in Indigenous communities.
“The Government is working hard to keep young Indigenous people engaged in healthy, safe activities,” Ms Macklin said.
“All 30 projects support activities for young Indigenous people in the Northern Territory.”
Hermannsburg will receive funding for the purchase of sports equipment and the installation of air-conditioning in a recreation shed to support a local council project.
This will enable up to 230 young people to participate in positive recreational experiences.
At Timber Creek, the Government will fund an inaugural weekend arts and culture festival, with arts and craft, music and performance.
The funding will also support performing artists in the Timber Creek community.
The Member for Lingiari, Warren Snowdon, said building up youth support services is vital to the long-term success of the Northern Territory Emergency Response.
Northern Territory Senator, Trish Crossin, said youth activities were incredibly important in keeping Indigenous youth engaged in positive activities.
“As part of the Northern Territory Emergency Response, we have committed up to $7.6 million for youth initiatives,” Ms Macklin said.
