White Balloon Day raises awareness of child sexual assault

The Minister for Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs, Jenny Macklin, today launched White Balloon Day to raise awareness of child sexual assault in our community.

This year’s theme ‘Break the Silence on Child Sexual Assault…It’s ALL WHITE to Say No’ encourages the community to take a stand against child sexual assault and help survivors speak up.

The Australian Government has provided almost $150,000 to support White Balloon Day.

Bravehearts plays an important role in our community, educating and raising awareness and providing support to the victims and survivors of child sexual abuse.

White Balloon Day is led by Bravehearts Founder and Executive Director Hetty Johnston, who is a long-time crusader of children’s rights and has actively spoken out on child protection issues in Australia.

The Government is working with Bravehearts, state and territory governments and other non-government organisations to tackle child abuse and neglect.

The Australian Government has led the development of a National Framework for Protecting Australia’s Children 2009-2020, which was endorsed by the Council of Australian Governments in April 2009.

The National Framework is an ambitious, long-term approach supported by all levels of government to ensure the safety and wellbeing of Australian children.

Every child has the right to a safe, healthy and happy childhood.

White Balloon Day coincides with National Child Protection Week, held from the 6 to 12 September 2009.
