Boost for volunteer organisations ahead of International Volunteer Day

More than 6700 community organisations across the country will benefit from $21 million in Australian Government funding for volunteer grants.

The Volunteer Grants Program 2009 will support about 366,000 volunteers and assist organisations to buy small equipment and to help with fuel costs.

Under the program, grants of between $1,000 and $5,000 are provided to non-profit organisations.

The grants help community organisations to purchase items such as computers, printers, cameras, fridges, marquees and shade sails.

This year computers and fuel reimbursements were the most requested items. At least 1,770 computers will be purchased under the grants program, and about 29,700 people will receive reimbursements on fuel costs under the 2009 grants.

Every day volunteers are out in their local communities doing what they do best – helping those in need, nurturing our environment and fostering our nation’s sporting and cultural life.

In the past year volunteers have also been a huge support to individuals, families and communities recovering from a number of natural disasters including the Victorian bushfires.

The Australian Government values the hard work of the 5.4 million Australian volunteers, who give their valuable time, expertise and understanding to the most vulnerable and disadvantaged people in our community.

Volunteering is a key part the Australian Government’s vision of an inclusive Australia where everyone’s contribution is valued and has the opportunity to fulfil their potential.

Volunteers also play a significant economic role with voluntary work contributing approximately $14.6 billion to the Australian economy each year.
