Supporting Australia’s volunteers

The Gillard Government is continuing its support of the nation’s volunteers with $16 million worth of grants now available to not-for-profit organisations.

Applications opened today for the Volunteer Grants 2011 initiative.

Grants between $1,000 and $5,000 are available to help eligible not-for-profit organisations purchase essential equipment, contribute to fuel costs, training courses and background checks.

To support people most in need, preference will be given to organisations with volunteers that assist disadvantaged individuals, families and communities, organisations located in regional and rural areas and organisations affected by recent natural disasters.

In 2010, more than 6,000 organisations received Volunteer Grants, supporting more than 253,000 volunteers.

Volunteer organisations used the funding to purchase computers, first aid kits and sunshades, contribute to fuel costs and training courses to develop the skills of volunteers.

The Gillard Government recognises and values the important work of volunteers who play a crucial role in our communities.

Large numbers of volunteers continue to assist disaster affected communities, helping people to rebuild their lives and livelihoods.

More than 5 million Australians are recognised and valued as community volunteers.

This represents one in every four Australians working tirelessly to help others, promote active citizenship, build connections and assist in creating stronger communities.

This year volunteers are celebrating the 10th Anniversary of the United Nations International Year of Volunteers.

Volunteer Grants 2011 will provide practical and tangible support to community organisations across Australia to support volunteers and encourage more people to take up volunteering.
