Linking Indigenous Australians with community support services

The Gillard Government will continue funding for a successful program connecting Indigenous Australians with community support services to help them overcome disadvantage and social isolation.

The Minister for Indigenous Affairs, Jenny Macklin and the Minister for Community Services, Julie Collins, today announced that $42 million in funding will be provided over the next three years to the Indigenous Community Links initiative, formerly known as the Community Support Services.

“The new funding will allow 62 not-for-profit organisations to continue to deliver support in 84 locations in both urban and regional areas,” Ms Collins said.

“Since it began in July 2009, the program has assisted more than 71,500 Indigenous Australians.

“Indigenous Community Links provides information, advice and referrals to services that assist with welfare and social support, employment, legal matters and housing.

“The initiative also provides free access to the internet – an important tool in job placement and training,” Ms Collins said.

Ms Macklin said the program builds on the Gillard Government’s commitment to closing the gap.

“This funding will ensure more Indigenous Australians and their families will be better connected to local services and support,” Ms Macklin said.

“This includes connecting people to the full range of community services available to improve employment, health and social outcomes.

“Creating these links for Indigenous Australians to a wide range of services will lead to better lives for themselves and their children,” Ms Macklin said.
