New Big Red Bus launched
One of Australia’s most innovative and eye-catching youth information and referral services was launched in Numurkah today by Federal Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, Larry Anthony, and Member for Murray, Dr Sharman Stone.
“The brand new Big Red Bus will provide counselling, support, information and referral services for young people in the Murray electorate,” Dr Stone said.
“It is an excellent example of what can be achieved when government and community groups work together.
“The original Big Red Bus started three years ago when Cutting Edge Youth Services, local trades people and young people worked together to refit an old 1970s Bedford 44-seater bus.
“Since then, the bus has been a welcome sight at all sorts of community events and youth expos,” Dr Stone said.
Mr Anthony said that the innovative project is delivered by Cutting Edge Youth Services / UnitingCare. Funding of $36,000 this year from the Coalition Government was provided to the service as part of the Rural Youth Information Service program.
“Two other areas of Victoria have taken the lead set by the Big Red Bus and have similar buses operating in their own districts.
“Organisations such as Cutting Edge Youth Services play a valuable role the community by providing young people with access to information and advice on employment, education, training, income support, accommodation and health.
“Sharman Stone is an excellent representative for the young people of Murray. She is a strong advocate for services such as Cutting Edge Youth Services to ensure the young people of Murray are well placed to make good decisions about the issues and choices they face,” Mr Anthony said.
