26.4 million to help people in crisis
Minister for Community Services Larry Anthony today announced funding to help Australians experiencing extreme financial crisis.
“1,300 community welfare organisations across Australia will receive more than $26.4 million of Emergency Relief funding.
“Welfare agencies distribute Emergency Relief funding by providing cash, food vouchers, transport fares and cheques for utility bills.
“The agencies also help prevent on-going hardship by linking people to other support services such as financial advisers and family counsellors. These services are all important in helping people get back on their feet,” Mr Anthony said.
Mr Anthony said the use of current Centrelink and ABS data would ensure funds were fairly distributed to regions in need.
“The Emergency Relief Program is a clear demonstration of the Government’s commitment to help people in need.
“This funding is essential for those families who are facing a financial crisis and need help to deal with their immediate problems,” Mr Anthony said.
