Anthony moves on South Melbourne Centrelink
Minister for Community Services Larry Anthony said last minute negotiations have kept the South Melbourne Centrelink Office open for the next three months.
“I have instructed Centrelink to accept a short term extension to its current lease and continue to search for more suitable accommodation in the South Melbourne area.
“I was concerned the previous owner of the building wanted a massive 90 per cent rent increase and a new 10 year lease – terms which were obviously unacceptable. The building has also become too small for Centrelink requirements and does not meet the Disability Discrimination Act.
“I am pleased Centrelink was able to negotiate a three month extension to allow for more options to be explored.
“I am committed to maintaining a Centrelink office in South Melbourne and have taken this decision in the best interests of Centrelink customers in South Melbourne who I know have been concerned that they may have to travel to Windsor to use Centrelink services.
“I sincerely hope that a suitable site is found over the next three months,” Mr Anthony said.
