More than $325,000 to further assist the status of women

Ten national women’s non-government organisations will share in over $325,000 in Howard Government funding to undertake projects to improve the status of women in Australia.

The Minister Assisting the Prime Minister for Women’s Issues, the Hon Julie Bishop MP, today announced ten projects would receive funding under the second grant round in 2005-06 of the four year $15 million Women’s Leadership and Development Programme.

“The Program provides up to $50,000 funding for projects which contribute to public policy or service development, and up to $25,000 for projects helping women’s non-government organisations become more effective,” Minister Bishop said.

Projects must be relevant to current women’s issues and address at least one of the following policy goals:

  • Economic self-sufficiency and security for women;
  • Improving the status and position of women;
  • Elimination of violence in the lives of women; and
  • The health and wellbeing of women.

“This year, for the first time, two grant rounds have been undertaken, and this second round of funding will see a total of $232,000 for six policy projects, including one project showcasing the achievements of Indigenous nurses,” Minister Bishop said.

“A further $93,572 will be distributed for four capacity building projects, including a project, which will assist women and girls in rural and remote areas to participate in organisational leadership and capacity building activities.

“This round of funding delivers on the Howard Government’s election commitment to continue its focus on leadership and capacity building for women.”
