$10 million to support drought affected communities

The Howard Government is providing $10 million funding in a dedicated round of grants under the Local Answers programme to support 81 projects in drought affected communities across Australia.

Minister for Families, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs, Mal Brough, today announced the recipients under this special funding round of Strengthening Drought Affected Communities – Local Answers.

"Strengthening Drought Affected Communities – Local Answers provides funding for specific projects to help drought affected communities in areas declared to be under exceptional circumstances, or areas demonstrating significant hardship from the drought," Mr Brough said.

"Successful projects include funding to run workshops on mental health, supporting youth through the recruitment and training of mentors and a program to ensure local youth are not missing out on school camps and other excursions because of the financial squeeze brought on by the drought.

"This is yet another way the Howard Government is helping families and communities through the challenges presented by drought. To date, total drought support across government totals $2.1 billion already spent or allocated. "Local Answers supports communities by funding small scale, locally developed projects that help build the skills needed to support kids and their families to build proactive and self-reliant communities.

"The Howard Government has committed $137 million over five years to June 2009 under the Local Answers initiative, part of the $500 million Stronger Families and Communities Strategy.

"This special drought-round of funding under Local Answers builds on the 400 projects that have already been funded under this initiative," Mr Brough said.

For further information on the Howard Government’s Stronger Families and Communities Strategy. Future Local Answers funding rounds will be advertised on the website and in the press.
