Brough welcomes Street’s decision

Minister for Families, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs, Mal Brough today acknowledged the decision by Sir Laurence Street that the policeman involved in the death of Mulrunji will be prosecuted.

Mr Brough said, as was stated at the time of the Director of Public Prosecution’s decision, people have to have faith in the justice system and with the matter now before the courts all the facts surrounding the case will be publicly available.

“I welcome the decision presented today by Sir Laurence Street and now this case becomes a matter for the courts,” Mr Brough said.

“This is a decision that will be welcomed by all Queenslanders, particularly those living on Palm Island.

“I would urge all involved in this case to allow the courts to get on with their job and I look forward to a resolution on this issue.”

Mr Brough said Sir Laurence Street’s decision meant that the time for public debate on the issue was over now that legal proceedings had been initiated.
