20 new affordable homes for families in Bellmere and Ningi

Joint Media Release with:

  • Mr Jon Sullivan MP, Member for Longman

Tanya Plibersek and Member for Longman Jon Sullivan today inspected a new four-bedroom home at Bellmere that has been built using the Rudd Government’s National Rental Affordability Scheme.

The new home is one of 20 four-bedroom homes being delivered for families under the Scheme by the Horizon Housing Company at Bellmere and nearby Ningi.

Ms Plibersek said the homes will be rented at 25 per cent below market rate to families who meet the eligibility requirements.

“This will allow key workers such as those in childcare, retail, and hospitality to live in areas where their skills are needed.

“The homes are ideally suited for families, with four bedrooms, gas hot water, water tanks, alfresco areas, air conditioning to some rooms, built in robes, double garages, and stainless steel kitchen appliances,” Ms Plibersek said.

Mr Sullivan said he was delighted that the Rudd Government’s National Rental Affordability Scheme was delivering affordable rental homes for families at Bellmere and Ningi.

“I also congratulate the Horizon Housing Company for working with the Rudd Government to deliver these impressive new homes in an area of high need.

“The construction of the homes by Devine Homes is also supporting local jobs through the use of local builders, contractors and suppliers,” Mr Sullivan said.

Horizon Housing Company CEO Jason Cubit said that the Horizon Housing Company had so far won 369 incentives to deliver new affordable rental homes under the National Rental Affordability Scheme.

“Of the 20 new homes being built at Bellmere and Ningi, 14 are now finished with the remainder nearing completion.

“We are pleased with how the National Rental Affordability Scheme is working and look forward to delivering more new affordable rental homes soon,” Mr Cubit said.

The Rudd Government is investing more than $1 billion in the National Rental Affordability Scheme over the next four years.

The Scheme is one part of the Government’s program to deliver more than 80,000 new affordable homes across Australia by 2012.
