Gender-based violence expert appointed to Government Services Independent Advisory Board

Professor Jan Breckenridge has been appointed as the newest member of the Minister for Government Services’ Independent Advisory Board.

The Advisory Board provides guidance, insights and recommendations on the design, delivery, and implementation of government services.

Professor Breckenridge’s extensive expertise in domestic and family violence and the government policy landscape positions her well to provide expert guidance in this crucial area.

As a member of the Advisory Board, Professor Breckenridge will be pivotal in helping address the barriers that people may face when seeking support from government services following domestic abuse.

In particular, Professor Breckenridge will bring invaluable insight into the role that financial and economic abuse – such as in the child support system and social security systems – can play in the perpetuation of gender-based violence and disadvantage.

Currently, Professor Breckenridge heads the School of Social Sciences at the University of New South Wales, Sydney, and serves as the academic Co-convener of the Gendered Violence Research Network.

Professor Breckenridge is expected to attend her first Board meeting on 21 May 2025.

The establishment of the Advisory Board was one of the recommendations from the myGov user audit. More information on the Advisory Board is available on Minister Gallagher’s website.
