Strengthening Territory Child Protection and Youth Justice
Federal Assistant Minister for Children and Families Michelle Landry will attend the ninth meeting of the Northern Territory Tripartite Forum, which is being held today in Darwin.
The Tripartite Forum oversees a range of reforms to support children who are involved in, or are at risk of entering, the child protection and youth justice systems in the Territory – with a particular focus on their impacts on Aboriginal families.
Assistant Minister Landry said that the work of the Forum was vital in driving reforms to child protection and youth justice in the Top End.
“The Tripartite Forum is the critical link in strengthening partnerships between the Australian and NT Governments, and the community sector, so together we can help ensure that all children, families and communities in this part of the nation can be safe, and reach their full potential,” Assistant Minister Landry said.
At its meeting today, the Forum will discuss the Australian Government’s priorities for children and families.
Members will also be examining the development and implementation of the 10-year Generational Strategy for Children and Families in the Northern Territory, a recommendation of the Royal Commission into the Protection and Detention of Children.
Assistant Minister Landry said that the Forum has a vital role in supporting engagement between all levels of government and the community sector.
“Partnerships such as this has helped in the delivery of place-based, collective impact initiatives across Australia such as the Morrison Government’s $35 million Stronger Places, Stronger People program, which has empowered communities to develop their own action plans to help address entrenched problems for local families and children,” Assistant Minister Landry said.
“The Morrison Government is committed to help secure positive outcomes for children who live in the Territory, and the leadership of the Tripartite Forum remains crucial in helping us achieve that goal.”
Membership of the Forum consists of representatives from the Australian and Northern Territory Governments, as well as community leaders.
