Outstanding Alice Springs Women’s Shelter recognised

Assistant Minister for Children and Families, Ms Michelle Landry, today visited the Alice Springs Women’s Shelter to acknowledge their work and success in receiving a grant of $225,000 over four and a half years following the recent Emergency Relief funding round.

“The staff at the shelter are highly dedicated and work every day to support women and children experiencing domestic and family violence. I am pleased that I was able to visit and recognise this amazing work in person,” said Ms Landry.

“The grant means that the shelter’s funding has more than doubled so they can continue to provide this much needed service.

Nationally, the Government has provided more than $100 million per annum over four and a half years to support vulnerable Australians.

“The shelter offers a range of programs to help vulnerable women to explore options of how to keep themselves, and their children safe,” said Ms Landry.

“The services they provide every day include emergency relief, emergency accommodation, outreach support, court support and counselling. They provide a 30-bed, high security crisis accommodation service for women and children under immediate threat of domestic violence, with staff on site 24 hours a day.

“While being accommodated, women and children can access a range of services including case management, safety planning, counselling, emergency relief and referral to other services.

“The Coalition Government is committed to improving outcomes for victims of domestic, family and sexual violence, demonstrated by an investment of more than $700 million since the introduction of the National Plan to Reduce Violence against Women and Their Children 2010-22.
