World Homeless Day 2020
Today marks World Homeless Day, an annual event held to raise awareness about people who may be experiencing homelessness and draw attention to their local needs.
Assistant Minister for Community Housing, Homelessness and Community Services, Luke Howarth acknowledged the importance of the day.
“It’s been a tough year and today is an opportunity to really support those in our local communities who may be struggling,” Assistant Minister Howarth said.
“The COVID-19 pandemic represents a significant challenge for our community and economy and the Morrison Government has responded swiftly to support Australians during this time.”
This year the Government will provide around $1.6 billion to state and territory governments through the National Housing and Homelessness Agreement, which includes around $129 million in dedicated homelessness funding.
Approximately 1.7 million eligible income support and family tax benefit recipients will receive Commonwealth Rent Assistance – expected to be around $5.5 billion in 2020-21 to help people pay their rent in the private rental market or in community housing.
The Government has also provided $118 million over five years for the Reconnect program which supports young people experiencing, or at risk of, homelessness and their families.
“We know that family and domestic violence is one of the leading causes of homelessness for women and children and I was pleased to announce the outcome of the $60 million Safe Places Emergency Accommodation program recently.
“The Morrison Government understands homelessness can affect anyone. That’s why we are continuing to invest in programs aimed at improving housing and homelessness outcomes in Australia”, Assistant Minister Howarth said.
