Employers and people with disability connect to explore the possibilities

More than 480 employers and over 830 people with disability across Australia are participating in AccessAbility Day this week.

AccessAbility Day is an initiative where employers volunteer to host a person with a disability in their workplace for a day.  It gives employers the chance to see what it’s like to have a person with a disability in their workplace, and it gives each person with a disability the opportunity to experience a workplace which interests them.

The Australian Government initiative aims to connect employers and jobseekers with disability for one day during the week 26 – 30 November 2018.

Assistant Minister for Social Services, Housing and Disability Services, Sarah Henderson, said it’s great to see the enthusiasm employers have to see the potential of a person with disability in the workplace.

“People with disability can offer a lot to businesses. Studies show organisations who employ people with disability have higher staff morale and improved productivity,” Ms Henderson said.

Michael Gower from Belgravia Leisure in Elizabeth, South Australia hosted multiple placements at Genesis Fitness and Little Para Golf Course during last year’s AccessAbility Day and said it was a positive experience.

“I believe taking part in AccessAbility Day had a positive impact on everyone involved in the day, from my staff to the customers and clients,” Mr Gower said.

“Participating in AccessAbility Day has been a great opportunity to provide a workplace experience in the recreation and sports industry.”
