Western Australia commences in National Redress Scheme

The Western Australia government has entered the National Redress Scheme.

Federal Minister for Families and Social Services, Paul Fletcher, said this was a significant milestone for people who experienced child sexual abuse in institutions in Western Australia.

“I thank the WA Government for prioritising the legislation, which allows applications for redress from WA government and participating non-government institutions to be processed,” said Minister Fletcher.

“It is now up to individual institutions in Western Australia to commit to the Scheme or, if already committed, to finalise administrative arrangements to participate in the Scheme as quickly as possible”.

The National Redress Scheme commenced 1 July 2018, with every state and territory agreeing to join the Scheme. The South Australian Government is expected to be participating from February 2019.

The National Redress Scheme can provide counselling, a direct personal response from the responsible institution for people who want it, and a redress payment.
