National Disability Insurance Agency opens doors in Chermside

People living with disability in Brisbane and south east Queensland will be able to access information about the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) more easily following the opening of a new National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) office in Chermside.

The Hon. Jane Prentice, Assistant Minister for Social Services and Disability Services officially opened the office today and said it was an important milestone in the roll out of the NDIS across Queensland.

“The NDIS will become available in the Brisbane Local Government Area from 1 July and the opening of this office here in Chermside will help support Queenslanders accessing and participating in the NDIS, Mrs Prentice said.

“More than 7,000 Queenslanders are already benefitting from the NDIS and it is anticipated that 13,600 local residents will access the NDIS from 1 July.

“This is another step towards implementing the NDIS across Queensland and will help people with disability achieve their goals, including independence, community involvement, education, employment and health and wellbeing,” Mrs Prentice said.

Hundreds of Queenslanders living with disability in Ipswich, Bundaberg and Rockhampton gained earlier access to the NDIS with the start date in these regions brought forward, while Brisbane, Robina, Beenleigh, Cairns and Maryborough will join the Scheme on 1 July 2018.

Once fully implemented in 2019, the NDIS is expected to support about 91,000 people with disability in Queensland and about 460,000 people nationally.

The NDIS is expected to boost the Queensland economy by $2.5 billion and double the size of the disability services workforce in Queensland.
