Tennis Star, Dylan Alcott, to be 2017 Patron for IDPwD
The Hon Jane Prentice MP, Assistant Minister for Disability Services is delighted to announce Dylan Alcott OAM as this year’s Patron for International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD).
Assistant Minister Prentice MP said Mr Alcott, also 2016 Paralympian of the Year, is a remarkable young Australian who exemplifies what IDPwD represents. His achievements, on and off the court, serve as an inspiration to all.
“His passion and positivity is infectious, making him an excellent choice to champion the rights of people with disability and contribute to the national conversation about how we can all improve the lives of people with disability.”
“I look forward to working with Dylan to promote the 2017 National Disability Awards and celebrations for IDPwD, which is held around the world on 3 December”.
IDPwD is a United Nations (UN) sanctioned day that celebrates and recognises the progress we are making to break down barriers, open doors, and create an inclusive society for all.
Mr Alcott said he is particularly honoured to be named as the 2017 Patron, as this year commemorates the 25th anniversary of the introduction of IDPwD.
“I have always used my profile in the community to turn up the spotlight and volume on disability issues and awareness in Australia and IDPwD provides a platform to do this.
“As the 2017 IDPwD Patron I am inviting you all to continue a national conversation that talks about what we can do to normalise disability.
“I want to encourage people of all abilities to be more aware, increase their understanding and be more accepting and inclusive of people with disability during their everyday lives.
“I am excited to bring together my passion and experience as a disability advocate, Paralympian, motivational speaker, and a person who has lived experience to promote an inclusive society that empowers people with disability to reach their full potential.”
Dylan has a number of achievements to his name, including dual Paralympian, Order of Australia recipient, spokesperson for the Australian Paralympian committee, co-founder and owner of Get Skilled Access, and is a recent addition to Triple J’s breakfast announcers’ line-up.
