Have your say on a new integrated carer support service

The Commonwealth Government is calling for submissions on the draft Service Concept for a new integrated carer support service system, which will better support and sustain the work of unpaid carers.

Assistant Minister for Disability Services, the Hon Jane Prentice MP said the consultation is an important opportunity for the public to have their say on how carer services and support is delivered into the future.

“I encourage carers, peak bodies and service providers to read the draft service concept and share their views,” Mrs Prentice said.

The draft Service Concept outlines the core services that could be delivered in the new system including counselling, education, peer support, and a support package featuring carer mentoring, respite and financial support.

The draft Service Concept was developed through research, co-design workshops with carers, and input from subject matter experts. It also draws on the extensive experience of members of the Carer Gateway Advisory Group.

“We want to build a new service system that reduces the strain on carers, increases carer well-being and better supports carers to continue in their caring role.

“The best way to achieve that aim is to consult broadly with those who use, provide and understand the carer support system in Australia,” Mrs Prentice said.

Throughout 2016, further co-design workshops, site visits, interviews, research and a second phase of public consultation will help inform the development of a service delivery model for the new integrated carer support service system to improve the lives of carers and the people they care for.

This consultation is a key component of phase two of the Integrated Plan for Carer Support Services. Phase one involved the establishment of Carer Gateway, a national online and phone centre, which streamlines access to information, support and services for carers around the country.
