Helping local communities reduce violence against women

The Commonwealth Government is investing over $4 million across 28 projects to help local communities reduce violence against women.

Minister for Social Services, Christian Porter said the successful grant recipients would each receive up to $150,000 to develop solutions to local issues.

“The prevalence of domestic violence across Australia is unacceptable,” Mr Porter said.

“One in six Australian women has experienced violence from a current or former partner.

“These grants recognise that we must all work together – governments, organisations and communities – to support women and their children experiencing violence, and to prevent it from happening in the first place.”

Some of the projects include:

  • The establishment of eight crisis accommodation shelters across North Sydney, Shoalhaven, Kempsey, Lismore and Newcastle for women who are homeless or escaping violence;
  • The introduction of a community leader education programme in Alice Springs to stop violence before it occurs and promote a safer and healthier community; and
  • The development of a youth network in Adelaide to better detect and act upon incidences of domestic violence.

The projects will be supported by Australia’s National Research Organisation for Women’s Safety who will also develop case studies of their effectiveness.

“These projects will give us a better understanding of what approaches work and why -invaluable knowledge that will be shared between the grant recipients and made available to other communities,” Mr Porter said.

Funding for the Building Safe Communities for Women grant is a Commonwealth Government initiative under the National Plan to reduce Violence against Women and their Children 2010-2022.
