Media Release by Senator the Hon Concetta Fierravanti-Wells

Register Your Harmony Day 2016 Event

Registrations are now open for events celebrating this year’s Harmony Day on 21 March, Assistant Minister for Multicultural Affairs Senator Concetta Fierravanti-Wells said today.

“Harmony Day is Australia’s largest national multicultural event. This year we are celebrating the strength of our cultural diversity, recognising the benefits diversity brings to our nation,” Senator Fierravanti-Wells said.

“Our cultural diversity is at the heart of who we are. We are one of the most culturally diverse yet socially cohesive nations on earth. Around 47 per cent of us were born overseas or have a parent who was.

“Harmony Day is an opportunity for people to come together to celebrate and share in each other’s culture and generosity of spirit by encouraging participation, inclusiveness and respect,” Senator Fierravanti-Wells said.

“By participating in Harmony Day, people can learn and build on their knowledge and understanding of the many cultures that make our nation great. The economic contribution migration has made to this country and the innovations that have resulted from our diversity are to be celebrated. Multicultural Australia is an integral part of who we are, our unity and character.”

“Every day we continue to see the strength our cultural diversity brings across all aspects of society, and for Harmony Day we want people to come together with friends and families, at schools and universities, in the workplace and within communities to celebrate cultural diversity.”

“I encourage people to get involved and register their Harmony Day events at http://www.harmony.gov.au/.”
