Best-selling author Jackie French named Senior Australian of the Year

Minister for Social Services, the Hon. Scott Morrison and Assistant Minister Senator the Hon. Mitch Fifield have today congratulated best-selling children’s author, Jackie French, who was named the Senior Australian of the Year for 2015.

Jackie has a long and distinguished career as a beloved children’s writer, earning more than 60 literary prizes for her books. Overcoming dyslexia herself, she has also been a passionate campaigner for children with learning difficulties.

As the Director of the Wombat Foundation, Jackie also raises funds for research into the preservation of endangered species.

Minister Morrison said the Senior Australian of the Year award recognises and celebrates the achievements of older Australians and their continued commitment to changing lives in our community.

“Jackie embodies this commitment and I’d like thank her for the work she continues to do sharing the power of reading and story-telling for young Australians, and her work in conservation,” Minister Morrison said.

“In recognising her achievements, we also celebrate the dedication and hard work of the many older Australians who lead and volunteer across Australia.”

Minister Fifield said senior Australians play a vital role in our nation working tirelessly to make our communities stronger.

“Whether it be through work, volunteering, mentoring, or their many contributions to community-based organisations, senior Australians bring a vast array of skills and experience that continue to inspire younger generations,” Minister Fifield said.

“The Australian Government recognises that older people are an invaluable asset and is committed to helping them enjoy active, healthy and independent lives by encouraging positive approaches to ageing.”
