Media Release by Senator the Hon Mitch Fifield

Dr John Grant AO OBE

It is with sadness that I acknowledge the passing of Dr John Grant, a great Australian advocate for the Paralympic movement and people with disability.

Dr Grant served as President of the Sydney Paralympic Organising Committee in the lead up to the 2000 Paralympic Games. These Games played an important part in building the reputation of the Paralympics and paralympians across the globe.

A former neurosurgeon at Royal North Shore Hospital and Mt Wilga Rehabilitation Hospital in Sydney, Dr Grant also helped establish Paralympic sports in New South Wales and organised the first Royal North Shore Hospital Games for patients with a spinal injury.

Dr Grant was also a co-founder of the Paraplegic and Quadriplegic Association of New South Wales.

His contribution will be greatly missed.
