Australian of the Year Awards 2014

The minister responsible for ageing, Senator the Hon Mitch Fifield, has today congratulated the Senior Australian of the Year for 2014, the Hon Fred Chaney AO, on his award.

Fred Chaney has had a long and distinguished career in public life, both as a Minister in the Fraser Government and as a committed advocate for the advancement of Indigenous Australians.

“Mr Chaney exemplifies the spirit of the Senior Australian of the Year Award, which celebrates the achievements of older Australians and their ongoing contributions to our community,” Senator Fifield said.

“Fred continues to devote his time and energy to the causes for which he has advocated over his lifetime.”

The Government recognises that an ageing population presents great opportunities for our community and economy as we better utilise the skills and experience of older Australians.

“Senior Australians continue to play an important role in our communities, such as keeping our volunteering and community based organisations viable and providing valuable mentoring to our younger generations.”

“That’s why we are so pleased to acknowledge and celebrate their contributions through awards such as the Senior Australian of Year Award.”

As minister responsible for disability, Senator Fifield also congratulated the winner of the Young Australian of the Year Award, Jacqueline Freney.

Ms Freney is one of Australia’s champion swimmers, having won a stunning eight gold medals at the 2012 Paralympic Games in London.

“Her achievements remind us of the character and application that is required to consistently perform at the elite level in sport,” Senator Fifield said.

“Jacqueline is an inspirational athlete and a great role model for young Australians.”
