The Australian Senate is one of the most powerful upper houses in the world and Harry Evans was a powerful defender and a diligent custodian.

Mr Evans sometimes earned the ire of the government of the day, but his approach was always to defend the role and rights of Senators and the prerogatives and practices of the institution.

The thoughts of Senators are with Mr Evans’ family at this sad time.
