Media Awarded For Excellence in Portrayal Of Senior Australians
Ten journalists have been recognised for their insightful portrayals of the lives of older Australians at a national awards ceremony in Brisbane.
The Minister for Social Services, Kevin Andrews, today congratulated this year’s winners of the Older People Speak Out Media Awards, for their foresight in embracing and turning the spotlight on positive ageing.
“Today’s older Australians provide valuable input into workplaces, families and the wider community,” Mr Andrews said.
“They are living longer and they are living more active lives than their predecessors.
“Population ageing means that, in time, there will be fewer people of working-age to each person of ‘traditional’ retirement-age in Australia.
“This is opening up opportunities for seniors to continue participating in the workforce.
“Our ageing population remains a resource that has yet to be fully tapped and more can be done to shift our nation’s mindset towards greater acceptance of seniors.”
Mr Andrews said he applauded the Older People Speak Out media awards, for recognising excellence in the media in shaping positive perceptions and understandings of older Australians.
“Congratulations to all of this year’s award winners,” Mr Andrews said.
