$85,000 Boost for Darwin Youth
The Australian Government has committed $85,000 to a youth program of music, arts, craft and theatre activities for around 350 young people.
A series of workshops and activities will be held over the next four months, culminating in a concert in Darwin at the Bagot Community in June.
The Minister for Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs , Jenny Macklin, today said the Government is committed to addressing drug and alcohol abuse in Indigenous communities.
“This program promotes healthy and safe activities for young people living in the Darwin region and offers them an opportunity to participate constructively in community life,” Ms Macklin said.
“This funding commitment is part of the $7.6 million assigned to youth initiatives as part of the Northern Territory Emergency Response.
“Young people are the key to the long-term success of the Northern Territory Emergency Response.”
A number of entertainment groups will be participating in the program, including Brown’s Mart, Darwin Fringe, Larakia Nation and Bagot Community Inc.
Damian Hale, the Member for Solomon, said the funding offered young Indigenous people the opportunity to participate in a range of positive and creative activities with direct relevance to them.
“I encourage young people in the Darwin region to get involved and enjoy the day,” Mr Hale said.
