$4.6 million for Northern Territory Youth Projects

Programs to curb alcohol and drug abuse and anti-social behaviour among young people in Northern Territory Aboriginal communities are receiving a $4.6 million injection of funds from the Australian Government.

The 24 projects will teach young people vocational and life skills and build pride and self confidence through healthy, safe activities and increased participation in constructive community life.

In East Arnhem, a community boat is being purchased to give up to1200 young Indigenous people the opportunity to participate in sea-based activities including contemporary and traditional fishing and crabbing.

In West Arnhem and Daly River communities, the Australian Red Cross will establish a strong ongoing youth network across the two regions.

It will aim to provide better coordination among service providers and improve the wellbeing of young people in these regions by increasing the variety and number of positive diversionary activities.

In Ramingining, a school holiday program and the production of a music and video project featuring community musicians and dancers will benefit up to 150 local young people.

And at Wadeye, youth sport and recreation facilities including the basketball court and disco equipment, will be upgraded for the use of up to 2500 locals.

Twenty-one of the projects are being funded through Youth Diversionary Activities and five are funded through the Central Australia Petrol Sniffing Strategy Unit (CAPSSU).

The Australian Government is also providing $155,000 to the Balanu Youth Foundation in Darwin.

The funding will support Balanu’s cultural camps for young Indigenous people.

Balanu provides activities for local youth who are at risk of engaging in criminal and anti-social behaviour, alcohol and substance abuse.

The funding is part of the $7.6 million committed to youth initiatives as part of the Northern Territory Emergency Response.
