Joint Media Release with:

  • The Hon. Joe Ludwig, Minister for Human Services

The Minister for Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs , Jenny Macklin, and Minister for Human Services, Senator Joe Ludwig, are encouraging people in South East Queensland affected by the severe weekend storms to contact Centrelink to find out if they are eligible for Australian Government assistance.

The Prime Minister today announced immediate, additional assistance for people adversely affected by the storms and associated flooding.

Ms Macklin said the Australian Government Disaster Recovery Payment will provide instant financial support to people whose principal place of residence has been destroyed or significantly damaged or anyone who has been seriously injured as a result of the disaster.

“Thousands of people have been affected by these devastating storms and they face an extensive rebuilding process. The Government will provide support during this difficult time,” Ms Macklin said.

“This one-off payment will also support those who have been seriously injured and hospitalised for more than 48 hours as a direct result of the storms.

“These payments of $1,000 for adults and $400 for each child are in addition to emergency assistance available through the Queensland Government.”

“Centrelink is playing an important role in the Rudd Government’s emergency response to the devastating storms that swept across the region on Sunday,” Senator Ludwig said.

“Thousands of people are getting on with the job of repairing homes extensively damaged and Centrelink has additional staff on the ground to ensure people have access to immediate financial and emotional support.”

Senator Ludwig said people who have been seriously affected by these storms should contact Centrelink immediately.

“I urge people to contact Centrelink to discuss their personal circumstances. Claims can be lodged with Centrelink today and payments are expected to flow as soon as possible,” Senator Ludwig said.

Affected residents can call the Australian Government’s South East Queensland Storms Hotline on 180 2266 for 24 hour assistance.
