Subject: High Court decision, Australian Labor Party
JOURNALIST: The High Court has just thrown out a case involving alcohol and the Racial Discrimination Act. Can I just get your reaction?
JENNY MACKLIN: Well we’ve just received the High Court judgement so of course we’ll have to consider it very carefully. But you’d be aware I am a very strong supporter of the need for alcohol management plans. I understand, as do many, many Aboriginal leaders, the devastation of alcohol to their families, women and children in particular, so we want to continue to see strong alcohol controls.
JOURNALIST: Are they racist though?
JENNY MACKLIN: As I said I’ll have a look at the judgement.
JOURNALIST: Minister, do you agree with the treatment of Trish Crossin?
JENNY MACKLIN: I want to first of all congratulate Trish for the contribution she’s made in the Senate over a long period of time. Of course, it’s been a difficult period for her but I do want to congratulate her and of course hope that Nova Peris will be successful at the election.
JOURNALIST: Does Julia Gillard deserve the loyalty of all her colleagues?
JENNY MACKLIN: Julia Gillard has my utmost support. I think she’s doing an outstanding job as Prime Minister.
